Kingsholm Community Fridge
Kingsholm Community Fridge is an initiative aimed at reducing food waste and supporting those facing food affordability challenges in Kingsholm and beyond.
We collect surplus food from local businesses and make it available to anyone who needs it.

What is a community fridge?
A community fridge is a fridge located in a public space. It enables fresh food to be shared across a community, rather than being thrown away. Anyone can put food in, and anyone can take food out; it’s that simple, it’s that easy.
Many benefits have been realised by community fridge projects, including:
-
reducing surplus food
-
increased community engagement and cohesion
-
increased links between supermarkets and the communities they serve
-
reduction of food insecurity
-
increased awareness of food issues
-
opportunities for increased healthy eating with free nutritious food

Why have a Community Fridge?
Food waste is a big issue in the UK. Each year, around 10 million tonnes of food waste is produced across the UK. Of this sum, it is estimated that 60% (6 million tonnes) could be avoided.
Kingsholm can now help to address this issue by operating its own Community Fridge at Roots. There are also considerable side benefits of helping to address food insecurity and give those facing hardship access to fresh, free, nutritious food.
Your help is needed
The effective operation of a Community Fridge depends upon identifying a pool of reliable volunteers who will form a rota to share the workload of collecting food from local suppliers such as a supermarket, delivering it to Roots Gloucester and monitoring the storage and collection process.
Can you help us bring a Community Fridge to Kingsholm by volunteering as part of a team of local food collectors? Training will be provided.
